It has been almost 2 years since I started to get involved in the field of hand-brewed coffee. In the past two years, I have changed very few coffee equipment, one of which is an electronic scale.
For electronic scales, I prefer simple and practical scales that do not require any applications or too many data analysis reports. Because when I brew coffee by hand every day, I don’t want the whole process to become a hassle, I just want to make good coffee and enjoy every cup. I don’t want every cup of coffee to be like an experiment in the lab, testing and looking at data reports. Once I've made a good cup of coffee, unless I'm trying to improve my skills or compete in a competition, having too much data will only increase my stress. The next cup of coffee may be the last cup of coffee you make for yourself.
Is it really necessary to pair coffee scales with apps?
Watching reports through different apps, I pay more attention to the on-site details and combinations during the brewing process. The powder distribution is different each time, the size of the filter cup is different each time, and the water distribution is affected by the first hit of the powder layer when you pick up the hand brew pot. The first thing you can see is that it may actually be your best report. I firmly believe that nothing can be more profound than seeing it with your own eyes.
Are the functions of this App redundant? Or is it purely a marketing technique by merchants? I have reservations about this.
So if a friend asks me if I will switch to a better instrument or use other Apps to share, I think... I still prefer the simple and direct tools I have.
Fellow Tally Pro Powder to Water Ratio Function: Why It’s My Favorite Feature
OK, it’s time to get back to the topic! First, let me summarize. After about two months of use, if you don’t need special analysis reports, I would recommend you buy this electronic scale for the following reasons:
Since I bought this electronic scale, the feature that I am most interested in is its powder to water ratio function. I think after everyone grinds the coffee beans with a grinder, if you are a coffee lover with obsessive-compulsive disorder (like me), you may have tried to put the coffee beans in exactly after grinding them. 20 grams of coffee powder, but after you grind the beans, the grinder may leave some powder, and the output of some grinders may become 19.6 grams and so on. For ordinary coffee drinkers, every grinder is different, and sometimes you may consume 1-3 grams of powder. This step may have destroyed your expected ratio, causing the final effect to be different from your expected powder-to-water ratio. There is a difference. I'm convinced that when you brew coffee by hand, you don't calculate the ratios on the spot every time. Therefore, I think it is a very practical function to directly display the proportion value when brewing coffee by hand.
If you are someone who pursues the "perfect coffee" every time, you will definitely want to calculate the perfect powder-to-water ratio every time. For friends with obsessive-compulsive disorder (like me), this function is very practical.
Laboratory-grade accuracy: Does this electronic scale achieve speed, power, and precision?
Because I play with ceramics, before entering the coffee pit, I actually bought a scale similar to that used in the laboratory. In addition to its slow response, it can measure grams to five decimal places. I think it is the most accurate of the electronic scales I have ever used because I used weights to test it. I once made a post on IG and used three to four scales to compare. I think it is currently the one with the fastest display speed, the highest accuracy, and the most sensitive sensitivity.
What benefits will the above three advantages bring to me? If you fill or withdraw water in stages, you may be like an e-sports player. Accurate data will be displayed within one second, so you can be prepared in advance. How to collect/inject water? I think it can achieve this goal. This is a bit unexpected, so if you see all my current posts and stories, why I use this pound is one of the reasons.
Fellow Tally Pro three major drawbacks
We have already talked about the above advantages, now it is time to talk about its disadvantages (in fact, the disadvantages are relatively few, and there are solutions, which may be just part of the fault finding).
First, I am more concerned about why an electronic scale worth more than a thousand yuan does not have anti-skid pads? Because if I use a glass bottom pot to brew coffee, the friction is relatively small. If I put the newly washed glass bottom pot back on the scale, it may fly out. I would feel more at ease if it had a non-slip mat.
Secondly, a friend asked me if there is a function to adjust the powder-to-water ratio for segmented water injection? I haven't seen this feature yet, but if it has a Type-C connector, I wonder if it can be upgraded? This may not be known until the official announcement is made.
Thirdly, the question I am asked most often is, can the espresso machine be used? Will it be too big and cause the scale to display abnormally? If it is a type like the Flair 58, the electronic scale size issue may be difficult to solve. But if you have a slightly larger coffee machine like me, you should be able to use it, just be careful not to drip water into the scale. As for other shortcomings, I can't think of them yet, and that's probably it.
Household coffee electronic scale: a durable choice
I think the positioning of this product has been clearly explained to everyone in the advertisement, so I won’t repeat it again. If you have questions about technical details, etc., I recommend reading other Instagram or YouTube shares that are more detailed than mine.
If you look at it purely from a home use perspective, I think I'm very impressed with this electronic scale and it will last for years to come. Next time I upgrade, I don't think I'll even need an app unless there's better innovation and different functionality. In its category, this is probably the best electronic scale in recent years.
In addition, the display quality of this electronic scale is very high, which is great! I don't want to see pixel displays still being used on new products in 2023. And it also has the functions of automatic weight sensing and automatic timing, which is very convenient after use.
Summary of using Fellow Tally Pro coffee scale for two months
After nearly two years of hand-brewed coffee experience, my needs for coffee equipment tend to be simple and practical. The "Fellow Tally Pro Electronic Coffee Scale" just meets my needs. Although most of the electronic coffee scales on the market are accompanied by app functions, during the brewing process, I think personal observation and feel are far more important than data. For me, what attracts me most to Fellow Tally Pro is its powder-to-water ratio function, which is quite practical for me who pursues precise ratios. Furthermore, the scale’s quick response, high accuracy and sensitivity are also among its highlights.
Of course, there are also some minor shortcomings, such as the lack of anti-slip pads, the powder-to-water ratio adjustment function for segmented water injection, and the problem of adapting to the size of some espresso machines. But overall for home use, I think it's a durable and high-performing option, and it performs quite well in terms of display quality and other automatic features.
PS: Based on the current information available, there is no WIFI/application functionality.
