Our First Home Roast: Kaleido Sniper M1 Coffee Roaster

A beginner’s experience of home coffee roasting

Roasting coffee at home initially seemed like an unreachable challenge. Six months ago, I began exploring different coffee roasters, and the performance of the Kaleido Sniper Coffee Roaster M1 caught my attention. I assumed that, as with learning pour-over coffee, watching instructional videos and understanding some basic theory would make it easy to begin.

Once I truly started, however, I realised that roasting coffee is not merely a technique but a deep field of study. If brewing a standard cup of instant coffee has a difficulty score of 0, I would give pour-over coffee 50 and a coffee roaster approximately 500—if not starting at 300.Understanding the origins and processing methods of different coffees, then choosing suitable green beans, was all more complex than I expected.

Beginning to roast coffee at home

At first I thought getting started would be straightforward and the roasting process would not be too daunting. Through 5lung, I began meeting different roasters and friends, but what I assumed was a single subject turned out to have many branches.

For green beans alone, I needed to learn about estates, origins, altitude and harvests; understand processing, auction lots, crop years and storage; and compare suppliers. I then discovered that a single order often had a minimum of 20 to 30 kilograms, so I was stuck before I had even begun.

After resolving those questions, I still needed a roaster. Few coffee roasters are displayed in Hong Kong, so I asked various dealers, friends, coffee enthusiasts and agents whether I could see one.

I then encountered direct flame, electric heating, power consumption, ROR (rate of rise), temperature sensors, ventilation and smoke extraction, minimum batch size, factors affecting the green-bean cost of each roast, and many other considerations.

After resolving all of that, I still had to check whether my home’s power supply and available space could support the machine before it arrived.

Before I had even learned roasting, I was already stuck. I then understood that coffee roasting is both science and art, and far more difficult than I had imagined. Did I ultimately enjoy it?

The answer is, of course, YES.

My first attempt at home coffee roasting

Today, as I prepare to launch this “coffee equipment rental programme”, I decided to buy an entry-level “Kaleido Sniper M1coffee roaster” in advance, because no amount of theory can replace practical experience.

From choosing green beans and loading the roaster to anxiously watching the data and seeing the beans gradually turn yellow, then finally reaching the finished roast, the process felt remarkable. Knowledge I began gathering six months ago finally became a completed batch today. The flavour still has a long way to go, butmade the whole experience simple and captivating. Although the result was not yet professional, the experience deepened my understanding of coffee.

Summary of my home-roasting experience

Roasting was harder than I expected, but every completed batch brings a sense of achievement. I hope to keep learning and one day share the results with everyone. Hearing someone say, “Oh, the beans you roasted taste good,” would be enough to make me happy.

These are my first impressions after today’s attempt. For the roaster portion of the “coffee equipment rental” programme, I initially planned simply to rent out one machine. After today, however, I think it needs a supporting package. Over the next couple of days, I will work out how to include roasting books and some green beans with the rental, helping interested customers lower the barrier to getting started.

Many people will also care about the rental price. I should reach a final decision in the next few days and will try to keep it affordable, so we can promote coffee culture while providing a comfortable experience. That is all for now; thank you for reading this far.
