    Cup of Excellence Coffee Competition

The Cup of Excellence (COE) is a coffee competition organized by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) to recognize the world's highest quality coffee beans. The competition is held annually, with coffee beans from various estates around the world participating.

The judging process of the COE competition is very strict. Judges score the coffee beans based on criteria such as flavor, aroma, acidity, sweetness, and aftertaste. Only the coffee beans with the highest scores can receive the COE awards.

Coffee beans that win awards at the COE competition are often considered the highest quality in the world, hence their prices are relatively high.

    2021 COE Champion Estate

In the 2021 COE competition, coffee beans from 43 estates in 12 countries participated. After evaluation by the judges, the champion title was awarded to Bensa Coffee Estate from Ethiopia.

    Estate Story

The Ethiopia Sidamo Bensa G1 coffee beans come from the Bensa village in the Sidamo region of southern Ethiopia. This region is known for its rich microclimate and diverse soils, ideal for producing high-quality coffee beans. Bensa Coffee Estate is operated by Tamiru Tadesse Tasema, who focuses on cultivating and processing the highest quality Arabica coffee.

Bensa Coffee Estate is located in the southeastern part of the Sidamo region in Ethiopia, at an altitude of 1800-2300 meters. Established in 1984 by Ahmed Bensa, the estate is currently managed by his son Abdulla Bensa. The estate covers 50 hectares, with 30 hectares dedicated to coffee cultivation.

    Estate Features and Flavor

The coffee from Bensa Coffee Estate undergoes natural sun-drying processing, which allows the coffee beans to dry within the coffee fruit, imparting unique floral and fruity flavors. This coffee has aromas of flowers, sugarcane, and lychee, with bright and balanced acidity, offering a rich and complex taste.

Bensa Coffee Estate is renowned for its high-quality sun-dried coffee beans. The estate employs traditional sun-drying methods to preserve the natural flavors of the coffee beans. After harvesting, the coffee beans are dried on raised beds unique to Africa until they reach the optimal moisture content for the best flavor.

    Award Records

The coffee beans from Bensa Coffee Estate have won awards in several international coffee competitions, including:

    • 2021 COE Coffee Competition Champion
    • 7th Place in 2022 COE Coffee Competition
    • 2020 Ethiopia Best Coffee Competition (BOP) Champion

    Coffee Varieties

The coffee beans grown at Bensa Coffee Estate are primarily Ethiopian heirloom varieties, including Guji, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe, representing the unique flavors and aromas of Ethiopian coffee.

    Sustainability

Bensa Coffee Estate is committed to sustainable agricultural practices, using organic cultivation and eco-friendly methods to produce coffee beans. The estate actively participates in local community development, providing training and technical support to coffee farmers to improve their coffee production standards.

    Environment and Sustainability

Most coffee farms in the Sidamo region are small-scale operations that use traditional organic farming methods, often intercropping with other food crops to maximize land use and provide food for families. These farms maintain ecological balance with minimal use of fertilizers or pesticides.
