Coffee Stage — Sharing Cup Series | Taste, Sharing and Hong Kong Craft
Many cups look appealing, yet the shape of the rim and opening can still affect how closely we notice aroma and the feel of each sip. Sharing Cup began with our wish to examine those details across coffee and tea, with selected sizes also suited to other drinks.
Coffee Stage presents our first ceramic series designed and made in Hong Kong: Sharing Cup. We set out to create more than a cup: a complete circle of tasting, in which each sip offers another way to explore the drink. Individual sensory impressions vary with the beverage and the person.
Designed Around Sensory Detail
-
[Thin Rim — Less Presence at the Lips] After repeated prototypes, we settled on an approximately 2mm thin rim. This dimension reflects our aim to reduce the sense of the cup at the lips. The intention is a gentler transition from cup to drink so attention can remain on the beverage. This is a design aim and personal impressions will differ.

-
[Wide Opening — Bringing Aroma Closer] Inside the rim is a deliberately shaped broad curve. It is designed so the nose can move closer to the space above the liquid, making aroma part of the natural drinking motion. We regard aroma as an important part of tasting and designed the cup to support a fuller sensory experience without requiring a separate tasting tool. Results depend on the drink, temperature, face shape and individual perception.
-
[Considered Capacity — Attention to Each Pour] The carefully selected usual fill of 60 g (upper reference approx. 75 g) can hold a serving of espresso, a small pour of whisky or several infusions of tea. The smaller volume encourages users to focus on each tasting.

Made in Hong Kong: Materials and Process
-
[Two Materials: Glaze and Black Clay] The upper section uses a special glaze. High-temperature firing creates natural variation, and the glazed surface can show subtle shifts in colour under different lighting as light reflects across it. The lower section uses Japanese black clay. We selected it for its surface texture and quiet visual character, which fit the form and tactile quality we wanted for Sharing Cup. Each piece reflects normal kiln variation.

-
[Hand-finished and Made in Hong Kong] From clay preparation and forming to glazing and firing, each Sharing Cup passes through more than ten production steps and is finished by hand in Hong Kong. The process includes two high-temperature firings at 900°C and above 1200°C. These stages turn the prepared clay and glaze into a finished ceramic piece. Even where the silhouette is consistent, each cup carries its own kiln-fired variation and the marks of hand finishing, making it a functional, individual ceramic object.

Why Is It Called “Sharing Cup”?
Tasting can become more engaging when it is shared. We noticed that an oversized cup can leave too much drink for a small tasting, making it harder to follow later temperature changes. Sharing Cup's serving sizes encourage sharing with friends or taking several smaller pours when drinking alone. One pot can be divided into 4–5 pours to compare the drink at different temperatures. We hope Sharing Cup becomes a quiet companion for attentive tasting and sharing.
Pre-order and Production
Made to Order with Time for Each Stage
Because the cups are made through several hands-on stages, production cannot be treated like immediate mass inventory. Each Sharing Cup represents time and labour. As Coffee Stage's first ceramic product designed and made in Hong Kong, most stages are handled within our local production workflow.
The work includes preparing the clay, refining the form by hand, allowing the clay to stabilise naturally, at least two high-temperature firings (800°C and >1000°C), individual inspection and final finishing. Each stage requires appropriate time; drying or firing cannot simply be compressed without increasing the risk of cracks or loss.
Earlier source wording referred to an estimated dispatch of 2 to 3 months. The current owner-confirmed production estimate is about 30–60 days from order, not a guaranteed dispatch or arrival date; timing depends on the confirmed production schedule.
We hope the Coffee Stage Sharing Cup becomes part of everyday tasting—a reminder to slow down and notice each moment.

Important Notes
[Gentle Reminder]
-
Characteristics of Handmade Ceramics: Sharing Cup is finished by hand. Multiple forming, glazing and high-temperature firing stages can naturally produce small raised or recessed points, pinholes, uneven glaze colour, fine crazing in the glaze that is not a structural crack, or natural glaze-flow marks. These are expected characteristics of handmade ceramics rather than signs that every piece will look identical. Contact us if a mark appears structural or affects safe use.
-
About the Special Glazes: Some glazes move during high-temperature firing, creating unpredictable drip or flow effects. Reflected light may also make the glaze appear subtly different under different lighting.
- Use and Care: Ceramic is fragile. Avoid knocks, impacts and drops. Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as pouring boiling water into a cup immediately after rinsing it with cold water. Hand wash only; do not use a dishwasher. Microwave use is not recommended.
Thank you for understanding the natural variation of handmade ceramics and for appreciating the marks of its making.

Sharing Cup S Size — Product Information
Sharing Cup S Thin-rim Tasting Cup
A thin-rim ceramic cup for espresso and small servings of pour-over coffee. Its approximately 2mm rim is designed to reduce the sensation of the cup at the lips. The 60-65ml capacity and wide opening support attentive tasting of pour-over coffee, espresso, selected small pours of spirits and tea. Made from black clay with a special glaze and fired at high temperature in Hong Kong.
Product Features
- Approx. 2mm thin rim, intended to reduce the sensation of the cup at the lips
- Wide opening designed to increase the exposed liquid surface and bring aroma closer
- 60-65ml capacity for espresso, small servings of specialty pour-over coffee, tea or selected spirits
- Black clay and special glaze, fired at high temperature for a tactile ceramic finish

Detailed Introduction
Design Approach
Sharing Cup S was designed around the sensory details of coffee drinking. Taste and aroma both shape the experience, so we adapted the idea of a sharing cup to everyday coffee use. Its approximately 60 g capacity encourages several small pours, making it easier to notice changes as coffee cools.
Thin-rim Craft
The rim is approximately 2mm thick. Compared with a thicker rim, our intention is for liquid to pass the lip with less interruption so attention can remain on the coffee. After repeated prototypes, this thickness was chosen as a balance between the intended mouthfeel and structural stability.
Why a Wide Opening
In our own testing, simply narrowing the opening did not always make aroma easier to notice. A wider exposed liquid surface may help aroma disperse into the space above the drink. The wide opening is also designed so the nose can enter the area above the rim during a natural sip. Actual perception depends on the coffee, temperature, face shape and individual sense of smell.
Suggested Use
Sharing Cup S holds approximately 60-65ml and suits espresso or a small serving of specialty pour-over coffee. Use it for personal tasting at home or as a small tasting cup when serving guests.
Specifications
- Capacity: Approx. 60-65ml
- Rim thickness: Approx. 2mm
- Materials: Black-clay ceramic, special glaze
- Process: High-temperature firing
- Suitable drinks: Espresso, small servings of specialty pour-over coffee, tea and selected spirits

Sharing Cup M Size — Product Information
Sharing Cup M Medium Thin-rim Coffee Cup
A medium-capacity coffee cup with a wider opening and an approximately 2-3mm thin rim intended to reduce interruption at the lips. Its elongated, curved body is designed so the nose can move naturally into the area above the opening during a sip. It suits coffee or tea served in several smaller pours and can also be used as a tasting cup.
Product Features
- Approx. 2-3mm thin-rim construction, designed for a smooth transition at the lips
- Elongated mid-section designed so the nose can move naturally into the area above the centre of the opening, potentially making aroma easier to notice
- Capacity suited to approximately 2–3 smaller pours
- Handmade black-clay body and special glaze continuing the Sharing Cup design language

Detailed Introduction
Design Approach
Sharing Cup M extends the design language of S while adding capacity and a different aroma-oriented geometry. We intended to retain the series character while offering a more practical everyday volume. This “balanced” positioning is our design view, not a universal answer for every user.
Rim and Body Design
The M rim is approximately 1-1.5cm wider than S and its mid-section is deliberately elongated. During a natural sip, this geometry is intended to let the nose move closer to the area above the centre of the opening, which may make aroma changes easier to notice. Actual position and perception depend on face shape, posture and the drink.
Thin-rim Craft
The rim is approximately 2-3mm thick. It is slightly thicker than S because larger ceramic forms are more prone to deformation during high-temperature firing. The added thickness supports structural stability while retaining the series' thin-rim character.
Aroma-oriented Design
In our day-to-day testing, a larger exposed liquid surface sometimes made aroma easier to notice. M's wider opening was developed from that observation. It is a design intention and first-party observation, not a guaranteed effect for every coffee or user.
Suggested Use
M can hold approximately 2–3 smaller pours. It suits slowly tasting pour-over coffee or serving a shared tasting in a café. For a brew using 20g of coffee at 1:15 (approximately 300ml/300g beverage output), it can be divided into 2–3 servings. These are recipe examples rather than fixed results.
Specifications
- Rim diameter: Approx. 1-1.5cm wider than S
- Rim thickness: Approx. 2-3mm
- Materials: Black-clay ceramic, special glaze
- Process: High-temperature firing
- Suitable drinks: Pour-over coffee, tea and selected spirits
- Suggested use: Personal tasting or shared café tasting

Sharing Cup L Size — Product Information
Sharing Cup L Large-capacity Coffee Cup
The largest-capacity model in the Sharing Cup Series holds approximately 300-330ml and can receive a full pour-over directly. Its wide opening and approximately 3-4mm rim are designed to balance aroma access, drinking feel and structural stability. For office use, it may reduce the need for a separate server. Confirm the dripper footprint, weight and stability before brewing directly over the cup.
Product Features
- Approx. 300-330ml capacity; can be used to receive a full pour-over directly
- Approx. 3-4mm rim, balancing structural stability and drinking feel
- Largest opening in the series, designed to make aroma easier to approach
- Can reduce the number of brewing vessels in an office or compact setup
- Proportions refined through several prototypes to avoid an overly bulky appearance

Detailed Introduction
Design and Development
Sharing Cup L required extensive development. The challenge was to retain the visual language of the series while creating enough capacity without making the cup appear unnecessarily bulky.
The first prototype was considerably larger than expected. We repeatedly narrowed and adjusted the lines until the current proportions were reached, aiming for useful capacity and a form that sits naturally on the table.
Multi-purpose Design
L holds approximately 300-330ml, enough for many complete pour-over recipes. It can be used as the receiving cup, reducing the need for a separate server. This can simplify an office coffee setup, but users must confirm the exact dripper fit and stability.
Pouring from a handleless cup to share with others requires care and may be less convenient than using a server. For personal use, brewing directly into the cup and drinking slowly is a simple option.
The Trade-off Behind the Thin Rim
The rim is approximately 3-4mm thick, slightly thicker than S and M. Larger ceramic forms are more likely to deform or fail during high-temperature firing, so additional thickness is needed for structural stability.
Large ceramic cups on the market are commonly thicker for this reason. At this size, we refined the rim towards a relatively thin practical limit while retaining the Sharing Cup character.
Aroma-oriented Geometry
L has the largest opening in the series and therefore the broadest exposed liquid surface. In our daily use, this sometimes made aroma easier to notice. This is a first-party observation rather than a universal performance claim.
Another design detail is the nose position when the liquid level reaches approximately 150-200ml. In a natural drinking posture, the nose may sit nearer the centre of the opening, which in our observation can make aroma more noticeable. Actual position and perception vary with face shape, cup angle and drinking style.
Suggested Use
For a recipe using 20g of coffee at 1:15 (approximately 300ml beverage output), L can receive the full brew with some headroom at around 300ml. Treat this as a recipe example, not a universal capacity or extraction result.
Recommended for users who want fewer vessels in an office, prefer to brew once and drink slowly, or simply enjoy a larger cup.
Specifications
- Capacity: Approx. 300-330ml (recommended fill approx. 300ml)
- Rim diameter: Approx. 2.5cm wider than S
- Rim thickness: Approx. 3-4mm
- Materials: Black-clay ceramic, special glaze
- Process: High-temperature firing
- Suitable drinks: Pour-over coffee and selected small pours of spirits
- Suggested use: Personal pour-over, office use or as an alternative receiving cup
Sharing Cup Alpha Size — Product Information
Sharing Cup Alpha Aroma-focused Coffee Cup
Sharing Cup Alpha is an aroma-oriented coffee and tea cup with a recessed rim. The recess gives the nose space to move closer to the inside of the cup during a natural sip, while the approximately 230 ml capacity and open interior retain broad everyday use. Alpha is not a limited edition. Current colours are Mountain Mist Blue, Night Blue, Dusk Mountain Purple and Ember Gold Black; availability should be confirmed when ordering.
Product Features
- Recessed rim designed so the nose can move closer to the inside of the cup
- The recess is intended to reduce the amount of outside air reaching the nose directly; actual effect depends on the user
- Approx. 230 ml capacity with no central column, supporting aroma exploration and broader everyday use
- Black-clay body with four current special-glaze colour options
- Regular-edition model; each handmade piece is individually checked

Detailed Introduction
Design Approach: Beginning with Everyday Habits
Aroma is often the first part of a drink that attracts our attention—like the smell of street food in Mong Kok or freshly roasted coffee outside a café. That everyday observation shaped this design.
In everyday coffee drinking, most people do not bring the nose close to the drink as deliberately as in wine tasting or cupping. A quick swirl and sniff may be followed immediately by drinking, so aroma can receive less attention.
We asked whether the cup itself could bring the nose closer to aroma without requiring the drinker to change that natural habit.
How the Recessed Rim Idea Developed
We explored several ideas. One early thought was a small external fan to move aroma towards the face, but it was quickly rejected as impractical.
We then reversed the question: instead of forcing aroma out, could the cup let the nose move in?
An oxygen mask inspired the recessed geometry because it creates space around the nose and mouth. We asked whether a shaped opening at the rim could give the nose room to move naturally closer to the inside of the cup during drinking.
After repeated design work and prototypes, Sharing Cup Alpha was created.
Distinctive Recessed Rim
Alpha's defining feature is its recessed rim. When drinking from the recessed side, the lips meet the shaped opening and the nose can move closer to the inside of the cup. The exact position depends on face and nose shape, cup angle and drinking posture.
This geometry has several intended effects:
First, outside air reaches the nose through more of the space inside the cup, where it can mix with aroma above the beverage.
Second, the wide opening exposes a larger liquid surface. Combined with the nose moving closer to the cup interior, this may make aroma easier to notice.
In our own daily testing, Alpha sometimes made aroma more noticeable. This is a first-party observation; individual results vary with the drink, temperature, face shape and sense of smell.
Why the Geometry Needs a Wider Cup
Could the same recess be applied to S and M?
Our prototypes suggested that the smaller, shallower openings of S and M left less usable space around the nose and less drinking time before the liquid level changed substantially.
The wider, deeper body used for Alpha provided enough room to explore the recessed-rim idea through more of the drinking process.
How Alpha Differs from Sharing Cup L
Alpha and L share similar outer dimensions but have different design priorities:
Sharing Cup L prioritises large capacity and direct pour-over use while retaining a comparatively thin rim and wide opening. Choose L when capacity and a simpler open interior are the priority.
Sharing Cup Alpha prioritises aroma-oriented geometry through its recessed rim while retaining approximately 230 ml capacity and no central column. Choose Alpha when you want to explore aroma with broader everyday use.
Neither is universally better; choose according to capacity, brewing method and preferred drinking posture.
Production Challenges
Alpha's recessed rim proved more difficult to produce than expected.
The asymmetrical opening creates uneven shrinkage stress during high-temperature firing, increasing the risk of deformation or breakage.
Early trials involved several dozen pieces, many of which failed during firing. Different glaze recipes contract differently and can crack when their shrinkage does not suit the black-clay body.
Earlier testing found Mountain Mist Blue to be a comparatively stable pairing at that stage, while a Night Blue trial failed. The current owner-confirmed range now includes Mountain Mist Blue, Night Blue, Dusk Mountain Purple and Ember Gold Black, reflecting later production development.
Early yields were low, with approximately one successful piece in ten. This history explains the development effort and earlier pricing, but Alpha is no longer a limited-edition model.
Use Notes
The recessed opening is based on common facial proportions, but comfort and nose position vary from person to person.
Users whose face or lip position does not align comfortably with the recess may prefer Sharing Cup L's fully open rim. This is simply a matter of physical fit.
Allow very hot coffee to cool to a comfortable drinking temperature before fully placing the lips at the recess. The intended aroma-oriented posture is easier to explore once the drink is comfortable to sip.

Thank you for understanding the time and variation involved in handmade production.
Sharing Cup Beta Size — Product Information
Sharing Cup Beta Aroma-focused Tasting Cup
Beta is designed to guide aroma towards the front of the rim.
By our current design positioning, Sharing Cup Beta is the series' most direct and experimental aroma-oriented cup. The actual sensory effect varies by drink and user.
It retains Alpha's distinctive recessed opening and adds a new central aroma column. As a drink passes over the column, a thinner layer can form across its surface, increasing the exposed liquid area and bringing part of the liquid closer to the nose.
This is not simply a cup with a different appearance, but a tasting structure designed to reorganise the path through which aroma reaches the drinker.
Why Does Beta Have a Central Aroma Column?
In a conventional cup, the liquid level falls as the drink is consumed, so the distance between the nose and the beverage gradually increases.
Beta's central aroma column was designed to address that changing distance.
When the drink reaches the column, a thinner liquid surface can remain around its centre and closer to the nose. As the cup approaches the lips, the nose naturally enters the recessed opening, further shortening that distance. Exact positioning varies by face shape, cup angle and drinking style.
The column does not create new aroma inside the cup. Its purpose is to present the drink's existing volatile aromas through a more direct and concentrated path; individual perception will vary.
How to Use Sharing Cup Beta
Sharing Cup Beta can be used directly like an ordinary cup.
To explore the central aroma column more fully, gently rotate the cup before drinking, or slowly pour a small amount of the drink over the column so a thin film forms on its surface.
Align the recessed side with the nose, then bring the cup to the lips. The nose will naturally enter the opening and the liquid surface on the central column will sit closer to the smelling position. Actual fit varies by user.
There is no need for vigorous swirling or a complicated tasting method. Beta integrates the intended aroma path directly into the cup's geometry.
How Do Beta and Alpha Differ?
Alpha
Alpha prioritises a balance of aroma, flavour layers and everyday use.
Its recessed opening gives the nose space to move naturally towards the inside of the cup, shortening the distance to the liquid while retaining the drink's broader structure and balance.
Alpha suits users who want to explore aroma while retaining broad everyday use and a more balanced presentation.
Beta
Beta takes a parallel, more experimental direction by adding a central aroma column to the recessed-rim concept used by Alpha.
The column brings a thin liquid layer closer to the nose, with the intention of presenting aroma more directly and intensely. Results depend on the beverage and the individual.
If Alpha is the more balanced aroma-oriented option, Beta is the experimental cup designed to explore how far aroma can be brought forward. Beta is not an upgrade over Alpha; they are parallel choices.
For balance and broad everyday use: choose Alpha.
For a more direct, experimental aroma experience: choose Beta.
Beta's Design Trade-offs

Is Sharing Cup Beta Difficult to Clean?
It need not be difficult, although the central column requires more careful hand washing than a fully open cup.
Although Beta has a central aroma column, the surrounding space was designed to allow a finger to reach inside for cleaning. Ease of access varies with hand size, and a soft sponge or suitable narrow cleaning tool may be useful.
After ordinary use, rinse first with clean water. If coffee oils, tea stains or other residue remain, hand wash with a soft sponge and neutral detergent.
Clean promptly after use rather than leaving a drink inside for a long period.
