In 2023, coffee enthusiasts would sometimes ask us which dripper had made the strongest impression or seen the most use.
The drippers we have used most are probably from the Kalita range, including the Kalita Wave 155, Kalita WDC 155 and Kalita WDS 155. Earlier models also included the Kalita WDG-155 and Kalita SG-155. If those model names are unfamiliar, we will explain them below.
Back to the main point: these are among the drippers we use most often for everyday pour-over coffee. You may wonder why the Kalita 155 series stands out among so many drippers, what advantages it offers, and whether its design helps support more even extraction.
Advantages and Limitations of Kalita Drippers in Coffee Extraction
Based on our experience in recent years, we normally brew with 20 grams of ground coffee. Once the filter paper is in place and hot water is added, most of the flat base of a Kalita dripper sits closely against the bottom of the paper. Models with ridges underneath, such as the sandstone version and Kalita Wave, do not completely seal the channels for water and airflow, which can help the brew drain more freely. After looking at the base, the next point is the dripper’s taller side wall.
Limitations of Kalita Drippers During Coffee Extraction
Although the Kalita 155 and 185 series both use paper filters, most Kalita drippers have three holes in the base. The folds in the filter paper also leave small spaces along the wall. We describe this as allowing air movement above the brew bed, creating pressure that guides the coffee down towards the three holes. Near the end of the brew, however, the flow may slow or a small amount of coffee may remain in the dripper. The sandstone and Wave models are less prone to this because their raised base keeps the paper from sealing against the dripper. Other models can show the same behaviour at the end, although extraction is generally stable unless the final few grams of beverage are especially important to you.
After spending so much time with these drippers, this is probably the only recurring limitation we have noticed. A video would explain the behaviour more clearly, and we plan to revisit it in that format.
Advantages of Kalita Drippers During Coffee Extraction
Is this extraction style effective? In our experience, yes. The compact brewing area keeps the coffee bed concentrated, while the paper filter makes the dripper practical for a relaxed morning brew or for trying a new coffee. Some coffee enthusiasts also grind finer and reduce the dose—for example, from 20 grams to 10–12 grams. With more careful brewing, this can be useful when working with an expensive coffee while still aiming for a similar flavour profile.
Does the Material of a Kalita Dripper Affect Flavour?
Across the Kalita 155 series, the materials differ in thermal conductivity, heat transfer and heat retention. Apart from those factors, we have not noticed a clear flavour difference during brewing.
Appearance and Cleaning Notes for Kalita Drippers
Those two points should answer many of the common questions. If the advantages and limitations suit your brewing, the remaining considerations are mainly price and appearance.
If you are considering a Kalita wave/WDC-155/WDS-155, pay particular attention to the copper and metal versions. Clean the dripper immediately after use to reduce oxidation. On the copper model, coffee grounds left against the silver-coloured area may gradually cause darkening. After washing, dry away water marks promptly.
The stainless-steel version should also be cleaned within the day, as surface changes can still occur over time. Other versions are easier to care for, although they may not offer quite the same sense of ritual.
Conclusion: Kalita Is a Strong Choice for a More Considered Brewing Ritual
If we could keep only a few dripper sets, this series would remain on our list. We also consider it one of the more approachable choices for someone beginning their pour-over journey.
The technique is relatively easy to learn, making it possible to brew a consistent cup of pour-over coffee. The series is generally forgiving and less prone to over-extraction, even when the grinder is not especially precise.
