Product introduction

The HARIO Technica TCAR-3 is a 3-cup coffee siphon with a usable capacity of 360mL, using a flannel filter cloth and metal filter holder. It gives you a clear view of the water rising, the grounds steeping and the coffee flowing back, and suits anyone who wants to control stirring and steeping time by hand.

The upper bowl holds coffee grounds and hot water for immersion brewing. The lower bowl first heats the water, then holds the brewed coffee. When the heat source is removed, the coffee passes through the cloth back into the lower bowl, leaving the grounds in the upper bowl.

The tall stand holds the lower bowl in position over the heat source and can be used with an alcohol burner or the commercial gas burner listed by HARIO. The package includes the siphon body, an alcohol burner, a measuring spoon and flannel filter cloth. Alcohol fuel needs to be prepared separately.

The 3-cup rating is based on about 120mL per cup. If you usually drink from larger coffee cups, judge your serving needs against the 360mL usable capacity. The 440mL full capacity is a separate measure from the brewing capacity.

Product specifications

For cloth filtration, use the F-103S filter holder with FS-103 filter cloth. FS-103 does not fit the F-103P／F-103M paper filter holders. The BA-15 bamboo stirrer is a separately sold stirring tool with a different purpose and form from the measuring spoon included in the package.

The TCAR-3 uses the BU-TCA-3 upper bowl, BL-TCA-3 lower bowl, F-TCA-2-3 lid and ST-TCA-2-3 stand. Match glass parts to the full model number and cup size.

Use and cleaning

Filter cloth and brewing steps

1. Before first use or when replacing the cloth, boil-wash it as directed in the instructions, then secure it to the metal filter holder. Place the holder in the centre of the upper bowl, pass the chain through the glass tube and secure the hook at the tube end.
2. Add the required hot water to the lower bowl, wipe water droplets off the outside and heat it. As the water approaches a boil, steady the stand and slowly insert the upper bowl.
3. Once the hot water has risen into the upper bowl, add the coffee grounds and stir gently so they make contact with the water. Control the steeping time according to your recipe.
4. After removing the heat source, wait for all the coffee to flow back, then remove the upper bowl and pour the coffee.

Cleaning and storage

Let the glass cool before washing. The upper bowl, lower bowl and lid are dishwasher safe. For hand washing, use neutral detergent and avoid abrasive tools or rapid cooling.

Rinse coffee grounds off the cloth with clean water immediately after use, without detergent. If you will use it again soon, immerse the clean cloth in fresh water, refrigerate it and change the water daily. This helps keep residual coffee oils from drying in the cloth and affecting the next brew.
